Joan Carter
Joan Carter is co-founder and president of UM Holdings Ltd., a private company that began in 1973 as a heart clinic providing stress testing and cardiac rehabilitation. In 1981 the company went public as United Medical Corporation, with a name change to UM Holdings Ltd. when it returned to private ownership in 1993.
Ms. Carter serves on the board of the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, is a former director of CarrAmerica (NYSE:CRE), and a former chairman of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. A graduate of the College of Wooster, she currently serves on the school’s Board of Trustees, is a trustee of The Lourdes Health System, and is the immediate past president of the Union League of Philadelphia, the first woman president in the League’s 150-year history. She is currently the chairman of the Abraham Lincoln Foundation, a nonprofit entity supported by Union League members and others, which is a leader within the Civil War community, championing Philadelphia’s contributions to the Civil War.
